Meatless Monday

I have a lot of posts about my newborn but I am getting about 4 hours of interrupted sleep right now. So when I can manage a coherent thought in English or German, I will try to write those up.So, I am going to talk about my other favorite topic. Food! The Scientist and I are good corn-fed Mid-westerners. We both grew up with meat-and-potato families for the most part. However, we are both trying to be health and ecologically minded so we switched in the recent years to more vegetarian dishes.... Read more

The Omi is visiting and giving us some much needed help with little 50%. We decided to amuse ourselves and went to the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Volksfest. Among the many booths of delightful stuffed animals and plastic crap toys, we found this prize to be the most coveted.BEHOLD...the GIANT CUBE OF NAUGHTINESS!Hard to imagine one might find something like this at a US fair for kids but...Happy Foto Freitag! Update on Skype

From 50% of my DNA, 2 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

still here, still pregnant...Hoping the Berlin summer stays a Berlin summer (in other words-cold!)As there are a few expats who read my blog, I thought I would update everyone on the Skype problem we had.It turns out, we had a nasty little virus that inserted itself into our skype files. I am guessing that is the culprit of our hacked account. Why our nice anti-virus program didn't find it but this FREE one did (you also have to download Clam) is still a mystery to me. I am still upset at the... Read more

WM Schadenfreude

From 50% of my DNA, 2 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Schadenfreude is one of those delicious German words that has been gobbled up by the English language. I got to see it in action first hand last night.Last night Yelli had a pregnancy-induced craving for Ginger Ale. So as a good husband, I headed out to get her some. We were about to watch the Italy vs Paraguay game with our SlingBox but put it on pause till I got back (one very nice feature of the SlingBox). While I was walking back, at about 9:10, which was about 40 min into the game, I heard... Read more

10 Days...

From 50% of my DNA, 3 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

10 Days...I am actually a big soccer fan, despite being American. In fact, much to other Germans great surprise, I used to play soccer. A lot. In fact, I think I played on 3 teams before son #1 was born which doesn't even include all of the extra weekend tournaments. Note: this doesn't mean I am any good but I do play enthusiastically...Maybe I will go into this in another post but I get the feeling that women don't usually play soccer here despite the fact that the German National Womens' team... An Open Letter to the Residents of Berlin

From 50% of my DNA, 3 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Dear Berliners,I have lived here for almost 2 years now and have come to love this adopted city of mine. I have even come to accept and find somewhat endearing the Berliner Schnauze. What would I do if my cashier at the grocery store didn't find something wrong with what I did and holler at me' (Note to Germans reading this blog: cashiers in Berlin don't differentiate among foreigners or Germans - be prepared)However, you and I need to have a serious talk. I rode on public transportation a... Read more

American Week

From 50% of my DNA, 3 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

One of the fun things about living in Germany is that many of the major grocery stores regularly sponsor "themed-food" weeks, namely Aldi and Lidl. For example, Greek week often features feta, British week has cheddar cheese, & Indian week sells pre-made samosas...all at good prices.Of course, these are less of what we think of as authentic food and more often what Germans think Country A eats (with much hilarity I might add.)Now it is our turn.Starting May 20th, Lidl is celebrating...
