Culture shock

Some say that high-brow culture should be taken out of the Theatres and onto the streets. Some have indeed tried this, and in Spain during the early 1930's Lorca's Baraka experiment to deliver music and theatre to the pueblos of Spain was a tremendous success. The best way to get to know the local culture from the country or town you're visiting is not to go with a big tour group. The fist thing would be to get a local, private guide, that’s because they will know more about what goes on in the town. Also big transportation companies usually don't have staff form the specific town you are in, that means they won't know as much about the area as a local one. Some things just look odd.  You know, sheep feet on the sidewalk, aluminium foil on drying racks outside the hair salon and 4 black men on horseback in the median on Rt 202. It's a well-known fact that my family has a plumbing curse laid upon them. Many of our family anecdotes revolve around plumbing stories that could have come straight out of Mad Magazine. From septic tanks that were blocked by a shampoo bottle to mains that have natural gas lines run through them, we know to expect the worst.
