For a change of pace today, I thought I’d share with you some YouTube videos about expats and their new homes. A quick YouTube search of “expat” turns up over 4,000 videos. As you’d expect, some are good, some are terrible and most are in between. Some are slick, commercially produced efforts, most are not. The ones I find most interesting are individuals who shares specifics about their new homes.
I’ve chosen 14 videos worth a look. We’ll...

Hot, with a soothing breeze and lots of little clouds.

Every so often, our doughty postina lugs up the hill a copy of The Author, the esteemed Journal of the Society of Authors. When it appears lodged in the grille of a ground floor window, it is a pleasant reminder of what I did before I became an expat dirt removal executive.

In this quarter's edition I read that Horace Bent has announced

Before anyone gets their panties in a wad over this expat from the United States writing yet another gripe post about living in Delhi, India and having the hellacious requirement of employing a staff ... ... let me tell you now that it may be a L-O-N-G and rambling post, it's not a whine (or a whinge) post. I'll save any complaining or frustrations that I have for my Husb ... who comes home after a long day of working with and managing 500+ employees (to listen to my issues of having a...

SATC 2000: Remember when our four favorite NYC girlfriends used to get together for brunch and a bitch session at a NYC diner' The convo focused on boyfriends, amour, and fashion.Fast forward to SATC 2010: picture four expat moms taking the bitch session up a notch: champagne and lunch at the Crillon Hotel. The convo hasn't changed much either: husbands, amour, fashion, and kids.
As an expat, the internet has really allowed me to be connected to the U.S. in a way that was, before, impossible. E-mail, facebook, skype, blogger -- they all allow me to keep in touch with friends and family. Unlike diplomats as recently as the early 90s, I don't have to wait weeks for my news. I just log on to Washington Post or New York Times and, bang, I've got it. All of these connections make Baku feel a little less far away. But I've been wondering alot lately about how much time I...

There is nothing more dull and pointless in the whole of the blogosphere than a expat blogger complaining about the city in which they live. All too often such posts pick the low hanging fruit of travel writing – petty racism, obvious cultural differences, predictable scams and inconveniences and so on.
With that said, I'm going to write a dull and pointless blogpost.
I love the word lassitude and probably don't use it enough. Lassitude means weariness, tiredness and a lack of energy...
