We left the rat race four years ago and retired to this little island in the Caribbean. Couldn't be happier! This is an account of the trials, tribulations and little joys of living in Mexico. Plus some fun pictures along the way....I hope!

Reading Clouds

When I first moved to this island from my farm in Minnesota, one of the most irritating things to me was not being able to read the sky. Think about it. How often do you look up at the sky where you live and know exactly what is going on with the weather. You have learned to read your local sky, your local cloud weather predictors. Take that ability away and you will soon see how frustrating it is.Over the years, I have gotten better about being able to judge the weather by looking at the... Read more

Ok, I'll be the first to admit it. I have been doing a lot of grousing lately about my life. Perhaps way too much "Woe is me" type stuff. Which is part of the reason it gives me such tremendous joy to bring you today's post.My good friend, Kelly, is here visiting and checking up on her house. She lives within walking distance of me. I love it when she is here. Silly as it may sound, I can almost feel her presence down the street, always sending me good vibes. And, being the kind of person... Read more

A Horse Of A Differnt Color

Long time visitors to the island will recognize the name M&J's Restaurant. For years they were located at the Rocamar Hotel. They offered outside dining with a tremendously beautiful view of the Carribbean while you dined. They are probably most famous for their breakfast skillet. When the Rocamar Hotel was taken over by the Lima conglomerate, they were displaced. They tried reopening in a different location but did not have much success. I am happy to report that they have once again moved... Read more

Let's suppose just for one minute that I might want to go on a mini trip this month. Since my big trip had to be cancelled, I am considering maybe something on a smaller scale.About the only major city in Mexico that I have not yet explored is the capitol, Mexico City. So, my questions to you that have been there or know the city:What should be on my "must see" list'What should be on my "must do" list'Fire away! My last couple of posts regarding problems I am having or have had here on the island have certainly generated a lot of response.I am grateful for the comments, and most of them make sense. But, really, as all of you know, just picking up roots and moving is easier said than done. What am I to do' Just abandon my house and flee' Life ain't that easy, my friends.Sure, there are nicer places (maybe) to live in Mexico, but getting to them is not an overnight venture. I could name several... Read more

Stormy Seas

From Isla Mujeres: Gringo in Paradise, 1 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

We made a quick trip over to Cancun last Friday. To stock up on a few things we needed for our doomed vacation. It was bright, sunny and hot over there. As usual.About halfway back across to the island, I could see that there was some kind of storm going on over the island. Did not look good at all.As we got closer, I spotted this sailboat. It was sailing in the only patch of sunlight to be seen. It was really weird and almost other worldly. By the way, I did not see any begging... Read more

I Have A Right To Complain

The weekend from Hell. That's what it felt like around here.Because of the problems we have with break-ins, I have only mentioned to a very few people that we have been planning a big vacation. Since last March actually. We were to fly to Huatulco again for the month of September. I can not adequately explain how very much I was looking forward to that. With the insolvency of Mexicana Airlines last Saturday, there went our tickets. We spent over six hours on Saturday getting our money... Read more

The battery on my Honda Beat scooter is dead. That's what happens when you leave it sit in the storage garage for three months without starting it. So what does that have to do with today's post'Nothing really, except that that is how I "scoot" around the island with ease to take pictures for the blog. It is a bit difficult with the Tracker because I can't just go "Wow!" when something grabs my eye and pull over. Once I get the scooter running again, I will return to island pictures. But... Whenever B and I travel around Mexico, we always keep an eye out for those little out of the way places. The Mom and Pop place. The Hole in the Wall place. The Sense of Community Place. We like being elbow to elbow with the other customers, the owner, the bartender and whatever staff may be working. It is just a pleasant, friendly experience. Finally, a place like that has opened here on the island. Meet Snackbar El Tico. This little place is on Matamoras Avenue, next to Bobo's Fish and...
