Tropical Heat

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 2 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I just added this link to a Heat Index Calculator (thanks Danny!) - it's now in the "Useful Links" section on the side. Coming from a fairly dry part of the world, I never really thought much about humidity and the effects of wet air before. It seemed strange when people would exclaim about "85 degrees, and *85%* humidity!" I had no concept of what that felt like - how was that substantially different than just 85 degrees'Hmmm - well! Since moving to the tropics, I have definitely seen what... Read more

Sabana Estadio Bus - San Jose

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 2 weeks ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I had a short day of school yesterday, so I took a long-anticipated scouting trip on the Sabana Estadio bus! It took about an hour, and I saw part of San Jose that I haven't seen much of before, including a nice view of the new stadium being built.I just missed a bus at 11:05, but caught one at 11:10 - I'm not sure if that says anything conclusive about the schedule, though. That was across the street from the National Gymnasium, and in front of the Libreria Universal (Sabana Sur). At 11:25,... Read more

If you enjoy Asian cooking, you will *love* "Super Sony" in San José! It is an Asian market *full* of delightful foods - prepared sauces, spices, dried mushrooms, interesting candies, umpteen types of rice, wasabi, fresh eggplant, tofu, soy cheeses...If you need chopsticks, steamers, soup spoons, or whatever, they have that too. Oh! and an *enormous* wok! at *least* a yard in diameter - c75.000 and it's yours! For my friends living in Costa Rica who can't (or just don't want to) get into San... Read more

Culture: Art, Music, Language, and Buses

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Thursday was a banner day for Culture, in all it's forms!I had a day of ART planned with a friend on the other side of the Central Valley, so I caught a bus into San José bright and early (but not too early!). I walked through downtown (stopping for pastries) to the Alajuela bus terminal, and caught the parando (the one that stops more often). I'm hoping it was only the temporary effect of learning another new language, but I had quite a time making myself understood (sigh, not usually this... Read more

New Cone on Arenal Volcano

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Apparently, Arenal *does* look a little bit different since the recent activity! Here is a short article about it, with a picture of the new cone. I don't think my pictures from our March trip show this area tho. Read more

I Feel All Sparkly!

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

My house is soooo clean! We have been in this apartment since September, and we finally have a housekeeper - and it feels so good!I had last week off from school, and so I attacked my "to-do" list. I talked to my neighbor to see if they knew of anyone they would recommend for a housekeeper, and they really liked theirs. They told me all kinds of information about their experience with her - how much you have to explain, how trustworthy she is, how much they pay, how fast she is, and how well... Read more

Arenal Trip

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 2 month ago, Read 1 times. Similar articles

When Big Bro Karl was here, we all trundled up to see the Arenal Volcano - what a sight! The weather certainly cooperated, and so did the volcano! :-)Since we had to wait until I was out of school, we couldn't take the direct bus from San Jose to La Fortuna (last one is late morning). So, we took the bus from San Jose to San Carlos, then switched to the bus to La Fortuna. We stayed a couple of kilometers North of town, at the Roca Negra Inn - definitely recommended. We walked to a soda for... Read more

Assorted Tasks

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 2 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I've had a few assorted tasks hanging on, and I finally got them done (whew!).- updated my brownie recipe post! Many thanks to Eleonora for correcting my Spanish!- got my kitchen gas refilled. I have 2 canisters, so I never have to worry about running out of gas part-way through a meal (or cookies! what a disaster that would be!). *But!* I waited so long to refill my primary, that my back-up tank was threatening to die. So much for "the system." Always before, I had lugged the empty... Read more

Trial Run

From Julie And Rick In Costa Rica, 2 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I start my new French class Monday (yeah, Memorial Day - gasp! Not a holiday here...). My new class is 3 days per week, for 3 hours each day. AND it is all the way on the other side of town! Shades of work in the Bay Area - it will take me about an hour to get there. I am quite sure that I will have a few bouts of "cranky" before it is over. Yesterday, I made a trial run of the trip:- 7:55 left my house, walked to the Escalante bus stop. Waited. Waited some more. Discussed w/ my fellow... Read more
