The Dutch Taste Police

From A Letter from the Netherlands, 6 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

We went to a local Greek restaurant (Delphi) last weekend and I noticed a Smaakpolitie sticker on the door. It is the only restaurant in Zoetermeer to have been awarded this sign of a good, clean kitchen. In fact, to be fair there are not too many restaurants that have been awarded this keurmerk in Zuid-Holland at all. The Smaakpolitie is a Dutch television programme hosted by Rotterdammer Rob Geus, which inspects restaurant, cafe and snack bar kitchens (and student houses for entertainment... Read more

Wet and wild weather

In the past almost 18 months that we have lived here in Melbourne, there haven’t been many thunderstorms, I think I can count the times I heard thunder on one hand. Melbourne is also a place that suffers from a major drought and we are currently in Stage 3A water restrictions. So when we get a storm like yesterday, it is major news. How to Make Yakisoba

From Tokyoblog, 6 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

A couple weeks ago my friends Mizuho and Siu came over and made yakisoba in my kitchen. They laughed, though not in a mean way, and certainly not for the first time, at me and my silly notions about Japanese cuisine -- in this particular case, my belief that yakisoba was, literally, fried soba noodles. The buckwheat ones. Fair assumption, right' I happen to have a recipe for "fried soba" and that's what it calls for. I've made it, and it's good! And probably a lot more nutritious than the real... 7th March 2010

From Pensioners In Paradis, 6 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Lots of UK election sound-bites afoot about much-needed changes, particularly in education and health. Good! Generations of UK schoolchildren have been short-changed. The brain must be trained to think independently before introducing PCs, calculators and more advanced education. Bevan's original postwar NHS ideal has collapsed due to too-many people chasing ever-increasing health treatments and cost-driven drugs. Result: blow-out.French schoolchildren have always followed a traditional regime,... Read more

Thousands of surviving victims of Typhoon Ketsana are still in desperate circumstances, half a year since the storm struck the Philippines, causing floods, landslides, death and destruction. Displaced villagers wait in temporary basic shelters for some solution. But for the government of the Philippines, the survivors are not enough of a priority. North Korea airs rare video of leader at rally

From Onemanbandwidth, 6 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

North Korea broadcast a video of leader Kim Jong Il attending a massive rally marking the reopening of a textile factory, a move seen as aimed at demonstrating his commitment to reviving the country's sagging economy. Congratulations to Roxanne at Doha Expat Mums & Kids (now Doha Mums!) for getting her new website up. Doha Mum's is now complete with a nursery guide for mothers, and now also comes with a blog. Future plans also include a newsletter. The website still has a forum which is both friendly and helpful (so I have been told - obviously not being a mum I have not been in myself!) where you can talk to people. Alternatively, you can connect with them on Facebook. If you prefer to meet people face... Read more

London calling

From ShazzerSpeak, 6 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Despite the Swede's campaign for Dusseldorf (which Dr. Darling maintains was a joke, but I'm not so sure), we now have Easter travel plans that do not include anything Germanic, unless you count the British Royal Family. We're headed to London, where we can indulge our respective alcohol preferences (gin for me, single malt whisky for Dr. D), as well as take in a little culture (the Tate Modern, the National Portrait Gallery), do a little shopping, and hit an Easter service where...
