Thought: Cairo's Night Life

From Snap-shot, Thoughts, and What-no, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

One of the things that I will NEVER get used to in Egypt, is that Egyptians love the night-life. Now, I haven't really determined what the actual reason is, but I have a feeling it originates from the fact that it is much cooler at night. Our family still operates on a pretty typical American schedule. That is, we try to go to bed by 10:00 PM. Now one thing that helps us do that is we have to wake up pretty early. We have to be at school by 7:30 in the morning to attend the teachers'... Read more

First of all, greetings to those physicists I've met over the last few days who, unbeknownst to me, have been following my travel adventures (hi to Joe and Jorge in particular) - it's nice to know that my random walk across the globe has brought some light relief from the task of enlightening our views of space and time!Today is the last day of the conference in Buenos Aires, which has seen three days of really fantastic speakers, and me, giving talks on all aspects of quantum gravity. My talk... Read more

Before falling asleep last night I read another passage from The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, which I am slowly making my way through, sometimes putting the book aside for entire months at a time. It called to me again from the bookshelf the other day and now I know why.  The time is right.  I am ripe and the teachings are able to penetrate deeply. Last night while reading I had an important breakthrough in my understanding. Until last night, my understanding went something like this: I... Read more

On Maids and OUR children...

From The Ramblings of a Saudi Wife, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

This is a very big topic here in Saudi. Maids have pretty much become the de facto 'mother' of many of our children. I must say that this is not just a problem here in Saudi, but throughout the gulf, and probably amongst the upper class rich throughout the world. The difference here is that one does no have to be filthy rich to have a maid at home, and thus have a maid pretty much run the house; cleaning, cooking, caring for the children.Picture Source:... And for the educational part of our vacation, part two

So we left swampy Washington DC and headed to equally swampy Gettysburg.  We arrived late afternoon to a rainstorm and Nick (GM’s eccentric college friend) sitting by the pool of the motel where we were staying  (he wasn’t, he was camping).  The kids took a quick dip in the pool while we waited for eccentric friend number #2 (Dean) to show up.  After  Dean’s arrival and several beers and cocktails, it seemed like a good idea to load up  the car with the 4 kids and go find some... A British author vowed Friday to fight charges in Singapore related to his book on the city-state's death penalty policy, even if it lands him in jail. Alan Shadrake, 75, said he rejected a plea bargain from the attorney general's office to drop a contempt of court charge in exchange for an apology for statements about Singapore's judicial system in his book, "Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock." "They can put me in jail, I don't care," Shadrake said in an interview before a... Read more

Philippines swimming in rice amid high imports

From Onemanbandwidth, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

The world's biggest rice importer, the Philippines, is now "swimming" in the staple grain because of massive imports by the previous government that drove world prices to record highs and possibly enriched corrupt officials. With government-run warehouses full and some flood-damaged rice stocks rotting, the National Food Authority, the state-run grain importer, has stopped new import orders for this year and asked Vietnam to delay its shipments until September, the agency's administrator Lito... The West Australian coroner has ruled that Penelope Dingle died due to poor cancer treatment choices deriving from "misinformation and poor science". Delivering his findings on Friday, West Australian Coroner Alastair Hope said homeopath Francine Scrayen "was not a competent health professional'' and had given "dangerous advice'' to Mrs Dingle when treating her.
