US expert: China oil spill far bigger than said

From Onemanbandwidth, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

An American oil spill expert says China's worst-known oil spill is far larger than the government has reported. China's government has said 1,500 tons of oil spilled after an explosion two weeks ago near the northeastern city of Dalian. But Rick Steiner estimates that 60,000 to 90,000 tons spilled into the Yellow Sea. He says the spill is at least as large as the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil disaster in Alaska. Steiner announced the estimate Friday after touring the oil spill area as a consultant for... Read more

Taiwanese wary about China amid warming ties

From Onemanbandwidth, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

In the crowded Taipei theater, Eddy Fang laughs politely at the Chinese ensemble's comic references to jealous husbands and overweight wives but can't help thinking it's all a bit lowbrow in relatively sophisticated Taiwan. The performance by the Zhao Benshan troupe from China's Liaoning province ostensibly aims to bring the Chinese and Taiwanese closer culturally and overcome the love-hate relationship they have shared for decades. But the crude comedy "underscores more of our cultural... Read more

From Onemanbandwidth, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

ApriPoko may weigh a mere five pounds, but this voice-operated, talking robot functions as a universal remote for multiple home appliances and devices. Its creators, the researchers at Toshiba, exemplify Japan’s obsession for all things robotic, but ApriPoko has gone even one mechanical step further than other robots have gone before. ApriPoko actually observes human behavior and asks questions in order to learn how to operate various remote controls. ApriPoko has a memory triggered... Read more

Fireworks over the Arakawa River

From TravelJapanBlog, 1 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

To avoid the insane crowds, which can approach a million people, at the Sumida River Fireworks, we decided to stake out a place at the Adachi Hanabi Taikai (?????) instead. Attendance the prior year was “only” 600,000 people so I arrived a little before 2 p.m. to lay down my blue tarp. Most spots were still available as it had been raining hard all morning. The wind and rain picked up at times; sometimes it seemed like a typhoon. I had to head for cover on several occasions during... Read more

On Thursday I amazed myself by sleeping until 9:00 a.m., something I very rarely do on Eastern time, and never when my body thinks that means noon. Two consecutive nights of very little sleep plus a dark room and an extremely comfy bed worked wonders. By the time we finished breakfast, blogged and organized our day, the morning was over. But hey, it's vacation.First thing, we headed down to the Ferry Building Market, new since the last time I was in San Francisco. The Ferry Building is a San... Read more
