From ExpatriateGames, 4 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

For a country with a pacifist constitution, Japan is bristling with weaponry. Indeed, that Asian land has long functioned as a huge aircraft carrier and naval base for United States military power. We couldn't have fought wars in Korea (1950-1953) and Vietnam (1959-1975) without the nearly 90 military bases scattered around the islands of our major Pacific ally. Even today, Japan remains the anchor of what's left of America's Cold War containment policy when it comes to China and North Korea.... Read more

I no speak foreignerish

From The Adventures of a Foreign Sala, 4 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Ok, this post might only really make sense to my foreign readers who speak decent Japanese since this is something that you won't really experience otherwise. Being half-Japanese and my relatively good command of the Japanese language, during a brief encounter with me, a Japanese person might just assume that I am Japanese and not really think more of it. But what happens occasionally when I have to ask some questions in a shop or other place is that I run into a person, who at the beginning of... Read more

Kathryn Bigelow's remarkable achievement won't change Hollywood

From LA From the Apartment the Size o, 4 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Credit Matt Petit It is remarkable to think that Kathryn Bigelow is the first ever women director to win an Oscar. Just take a breath and digest that sentence. Sexism is alive and kicking in the film world and especially in Hollywood and the Hollywood press where women are relegated to “chick flicks.” Bigelow has always worked against the stereotype, proving women have a penchant for violence and kick ass entertainment in film but I don’t think her win will change much of the... In Honour of Wangari Maathai on International Women's Day for Ghana

From This is Ghana, 4 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

I remember being in Vietnam in late 2006 for Vietnamese Women's Day and then in March 2007 for International Women's Day. The timing was a coincidence. On the first occasion I was invited to a lunch with our partner organisation during which they honoured about a dozen of their Vietnamese female staff (and two of us expats) with bunches of flowers and a feast of excellent cuisine at a traditional restaurant. It was a fun afternoon with excellent food and... Read more

Salon de l'Agriculture

From Just Another American in Paris, 4 month ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

We braved the crowds Saturday morning for the last weekend of the Salon de l'Agriculture. It's kind of like the state fair except that it's inside a huge convention center, there are no fried Twinkies, and there's a lot more wine. Otherwise, there was plenty of livestock, farm equipment, people clamoring for freebies, and yes, even a guy demonstrating a knife. For the record, it was not a Ginsu knife but "Le Nicer Dicer." No joke. I would say that his sales pitch was rather understated... Read more
